Chimera | Create to Destroy
As an artist, I have always felt an ingrained and overwhelming obligation to visually respond to events going on in our world. As a mother, I feel utter disgust and lamentation when I ponder the state of our nation and the condition in which we are passing the planet to our children. I am deeply concerned with our environment and the lack of equality we see in environmental politics. This work was brought about as I followed the events surrounding the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota. During this time, I felt deeply called to create work concerning environmental racism. My goal in these works was to palpably render my abhorrence toward the blatant disregard for human life and the environment when a corporate price tag is involved. To embody the side of industry that many of us do not have to see or experience, I used industrial materials such as rebar, tar, and barbed wire to create the work. My intention with these pieces is to give the viewer a feeling of distress and unrest by the use of imagery referencing the toxicity many people are forced to experience in their daily lives.
